When I began researching and writing THE AFRICAN
DREAM in the late 1990's, I never could imagine that when the
book would be published I would be the President of my country,
Malawi – let alone be the Chairman of the African Union.
In a way, the dream I speak of in this treatise is not mine
alone but one that I share with my fellow African leaders and
with all African people, a billion of them, speaking thousands of
languages, in 53 countries, and yet a people united by a common
sense of belonging and bonded by common origins, cultural,
historic, and geographic ties.
The Africa that I wish the rest of the world to know and
appreciate is the one in which vast wealth; cultural and material,
as well as deep political forms of participatory democracy and
governance have existed for centuries. It is the Africa with huge
mineral and natural wealth and a determined people that can and
should encourage today's political and economic powers to strive
for a better Africa.
